Gandoca beach is one of the few places in the world where the giant sea turtle, the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) nests. She mainly builds her nest at night during March till August with the main peak in April and May. Each turtle will lay approximately 100 eggs. Meeting this big lady (up to 1.75m to 2m in length) during her nesting activities is an amazing experience. The other two species of sea turtles nesting on our beach are the Green Sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). The leatherback however is the most abundant sea turtle in the area. During the tour you will learn all there is to know about the sea turtles and their circle of life! Gandoca community has been protecting the seaturtles for over 20 years. Interested in some conservation volunteering? Click here.
The turtle tour will take place at night between 8pm till 12pm.
Please wear dark clothes, so the turtles will not be disturbed. We recommend proper closed shoes because we will be walking the beach during the night. Water is always good to bring, camera’s are not allowed.
